This week was my last week at both the State House and also Understanding our Differences. While I didn't really have that great of a time at the State House, I did work I was really passionate about at Understanding Our Differences. I worked on creating a model "Ability Unit", for my Leadership class. This unit is actually going to be brought in and be taught to the class. I say it's a model because once we teach the unit, we will collect feedback about what worked and what didn't, an I want to bring that to other high school. Since Understanding Our Differences is a program just in the elementary schools, my whole goal of the work I did with them, was to be able to bring the curriculum into the high schools.
Let me talk about my experience at the State House. I had mixed feelings about it. I understand that some people really like politics, but it's not for everyone, and I found out it was not for me. First of all, I had a really hard time getting there sometimes. At least on Mondays, a friend drove me in. On Wednesdays though, my experience getting theree was less than ideal. I used a transportation system called "the RIDE, which is very unreliable. So I had to go though all that hassle for work I really didn't enjoy doing. I mean, sometimes it was enjoyable, but sometimes it dragged. But, at least I tried something new, and that's how I find out what I do and don't like.

I am so sorry I haven't been keeping up with these blogs. Mr. Finnegan's gonna kill me! It's just that, I've been very busy lately. Anyways, lately in Kay Khan's office, I've been working on social media graphics for the End Child Marriage bill that Kay Khan is the lead sponsor of. I've also been working on wring letters and emails to constituents. Specifically, I've been wring emails about the issue of sexual abuse in colleges and universities, and why it's an issue.
Meanwhile, at Understanding Our Differences, things have been going swimmingly. If I have to be honest, I like the work there more than I like the work at the State House. I don't know. Part of the reason I don't like it is because it can be slow at some points. I guess working in government is sometimes slow. Also, working with multiple individuals in an office can be frustrating, because it takes a long time to assign you work because they're busy, etc. But at Understanding our Differences, I'm doing work I'm really excited about. I'm working on creating an ability unit for my Leadership class. And even that is slow sometimes, because I'm working with other people. But the last time I was in, Jenni (the person I work with) gave me a Blindness curriculum packet, and she gave me the task of going through the books and seeing which ones are outdated. So I can do a little research and can update that. So all in all, I'm sort of stuck until the Ability Unit group meets again, but for now, I'd say we have a solid framework to work off of. I haven't blogged in a while. Sorry about that. But today wasn't a very exciting day. Kay Khan ordered everyone in the office lunch from Tatte's. I had a Chicken Pita sandwich. Then we all had a staff meeting. Then I waited a little bit for my next assignment, and I worked on my website for a little bit.
Today I stated by writing a response email to a constituent. They were asking about binning sexual abuse in colleges and universities. I went to Florins's for lunch, a Italian/pizza place. It was so good! Then I worked on the child marriage social media graphics for a little bit.
1. A CAPStone Internship is more than just doing some job for the 2nd semester of your senior year, it is an investigation of the industry of which you are a part. Write about what your initial/preconceived idea of the industry is/was before you started working.
I am embarking on two internships this semester. In terms of work in Kay Khan's office, I really did not have any knowledge of what I was going to be working on. I had never really done work in politics before, but it's really interesting to find out about! And when it comes to my internship with Understanding Our Differences, well, I've done work with them before, so I knew what to expect going in. My first week was exciting for me! I got to go to the State House for the first time on Monday. Because I am splitting my time between the State House and Understanding our Differences, it's so exciting to be able to experience two different places, but at the same time, two places where I get to do work that I'm passionate about. This week, I didn't do too much. I just got orientated and met the people in Kay Khan's office, the office in which I will be working. I also finished a proposal to have a movie "Intelligent Lives", screened at the State House. The movie is about three different young adults with intellectual disabilities trying to navigate high school, college, and the employment workforce. I also started doing some policy work about the dangers of tackle football amongst young children. The problem is, the Concussion Legacy Foundation encourages parents not to enroll their child in tackle football until age 14. So, it was a good first week at the State House. Transitioning to Understanding our Differences, the work I will do there is more disability awareness oriented. I will be working on a bunch of things. I am hoping to work on a disability awareness campaign. Along with that, I am hoping to make wooden signs near the elevators, in hopes that certain people will think more intelligently about how and when they do take the elevator. I am going to be collaborating with the Center for Civic Engagement and Service, and the people at Understanding our Differences, to make these projects a reality.
